Warnings after huge fire breaks out at Middleton mill

Firefighters are urging people to avoid the area

People living near to a mill in Middleton are being wared to keep their windows and doors shut after a huge blaze there this morning.

Six fire engines and dozens of firefighers have been tackling the blaze on Townley Street since just before six o'clock this morning.

In a statement Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service say:

"Shortly after 5:48am this morning (Sunday 29 March) six fire engines were called to reports of a large fire at a commercial building on Townley Street in Middleton.

"Crews arrived quickly at the scene, with firefighters using a turntable ladder, hydraulic platform, multiple ground monitors and a light portable pump to combat the fire.

"Local residents are advised to keep doors and windows shut and avoid the area.

"Crews have been in attendance for around two hours and forty minutes, and are still at the scene working with colleagues from Greater Manchester Police and North West Ambulance Service to make the area safe."
