Smoke billows from commercial building fire in Wigan

Emergency services have confirmed the response has now been scaled down

Emergency services were called to a fire at a commercial building on Leopold Street in Pemberton, Wigan, last night (22/05).

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) confirmed that fire crews had been at the scene since the blaze started just before 6pm yesterday.

Efforts to contain the fire continued through the night, and operations have now been scaled down as firefighters work to dampen down remaining hot spots.

Fire crews are collaborating with Greater Manchester Police to ensure the area’s safety.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "Fire crews remain in attendance at a commercial building on Leopold Steet in Pemberton, Wigan today (Saturday 23 May), where they have been tackling a fire that began just before 6pm yesterday.

“Firefighters worked to contain the fire throughout the night, with operations scaled down as the blaze was contained. Crews are now dampening down hot spots, working closely with colleagues from Greater Manchester Police to ensure safety of the area.”

“Crews have been in attendance for around 14 hours.”
