Salford car chase reaching 100mph ends in stinger arrest
A 36-year-old man was arrested after a 45-minute pursuit across the city
A 45-minute police chase through Salford has ended with a man being arrested after officers used a stinger device to stop his car.
Greater Manchester Police said officers from its Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit spotted a Nissan Qashqai being driven dangerously and erratically at around 10:30am on Tuesday 28th July 2026.
Speeds of up to 100mph
Police said the driver failed to stop and reached speeds of up to 100mph on streets with a 30mph limit.
The pursuit lasted approximately 45 minutes and involved ten police vehicles, along with a helicopter from the National Police Air Service.
According to police, the car travelled along the East Lancashire Road, drove against the flow of traffic around several roundabouts, and passed through an active underground supermarket car park during the daytime.
Woman taken to hospital
Police said a woman was injured when the suspect's vehicle collided with her car, and she was taken to hospital for treatment for minor injuries.
An unmarked police vehicle also suffered minor damage after police said the driver reverse-rammed it.
An officer was taken to hospital for treatment after suffering a hand injury when the stinger was dragged during the incident, police said.
Driver arrested
The pursuit ended after officers deployed a stinger, bringing the vehicle to a stop.
A 36-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified and failing to stop, and remains in police custody for questioning, police said.
Police Sergeant Neil Molloy, of the Specialist Operations Team's Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit, said: "This level of driving is obviously extremely dangerous, and I'm thankful to report that no one was seriously hurt during this pursuit."
"The reckless actions of this man put members of the public at risk, and we're incredibly lucky that no one suffered serious injuries as a result of his actions," he said.
"Driving in this manner through built-up residential areas is completely unacceptable, and I am pleased that our officers acted swiftly and professionally to bring the incident to a safe conclusion, secure an arrest and seize the vehicle," he said.
