People in Greater Manchester are being encouraged to take steps to recycle food waste during the festive season, in a bid to help the environment and reduce waste.

Recycling experts suggest families make a shopping list before heading to the supermarket to avoid overbuying food and unnecessarily wasting it during the festive season.

Cooked and uncooked food can be recycled in food and garden bins at home, but must not be taken to any of the 20 recycling centres across Greater Manchester. According to the advice, these centres aren't licensed to accept segregated food waste.

Many households will already have a kitchen caddy to collect food waste. It's recommended to use a compostable liner with the seedling logo and reference code EN13432 inside the caddy, to ensure proper composting. Newspapers, plastic, or biodegradable bags are not suitable for lining caddies as they can hinder the composting process.

A range of food waste can be recycled at home, including raw or cooked meat and fish, fruit and vegetables, rice, bread, cakes, dairy products, and even teabags or coffee grounds.

Residents are being urged to carry out small changes like recycling food waste properly and reducing food wastage, as these can positively impact the planet and also lower costs for households during Christmas.
