Police issue update after officer slashed in Manchester assault

A 40-year-old man remains in custody following the attack on Denmark Road

Police have issued an update after an officer suffered serious injuries during an assault in central Manchester.

Greater Manchester Police said the incident happened at around 4:55pm on Tuesday 12th May on Denmark Road.

According to police, officers were patrolling the area when a man spat at a marked police vehicle as it drove past.

When officers stopped to speak with him, police said he produced a knife and attacked them.

One officer suffered serious injuries after being slashed in the face and neck during the assault.

Two other officers were also assaulted and sustained minor injuries.

Police said officers used a Taser and PAVA spray to detain the man, who was allegedly resisting arrest.

Man remains in custody

A 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker, possession of a knife and possession of Class B drugs.

He remains in custody for questioning.

Police said the injured officer has since been released from hospital and is recovering at home.

Police describe attack as potentially life-threatening

Detective Superintendent Ian McNabb, from Greater Manchester Police’s City of Manchester district, said: “Our officers put themselves in harm’s way every day to protect the public and this was a violent and potentially life-threatening attack.

“No one should go to work fearing violence and our officers are no exception.

“We are treating this matter with the utmost seriousness and will work tirelessly to ensure the offender is brought to justice.”
