Murder probe after man dies days after Wigan assault
Two men have been arrested after Brian Cunliffe died in hospital days after the incident on Bryn Street
A murder investigation has been launched after a man died in hospital following an assault in Wigan.
Greater Manchester Police said they were called by the North West Ambulance Service to an address on Bryn Street in Ince, at around 10.35pm on Friday 31st July.
Officers were told a man had blood coming from his face during an ongoing disturbance.
The force said the man refused medical care at the time, saying he didn't remember how he'd been injured and would go to hospital himself in the morning.
Police were then alerted by Salford Royal Hospital around midday on Saturday 1st August that the man was in a life-threatening condition.
He sadly died on Sunday 2nd August as a result of his injuries.
He's been named by his family as fifty-six-year-old Brian Cunliffe.
Two men arrested
A man in his fifties and another in his thirties have been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Both remain in police custody for questioning.
The investigation is being led by GMP's Major Incident Team, with enquiries ongoing.
'An isolated incident'
Detective Inspector Hulston, of GMP's Major Incident Team, said: "I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family of the deceased during this incredibly difficult time."
He added that Family Liaison Officers are supporting the family and keeping them updated.
Detective Inspector Hulston said police believe both suspects and the victim were known to each other, and sought to reassure the community that this is "an isolated incident."
