The first Manchester derby of the season takes place today but Greater Manchester Police say planning for the police operation began before the season had even started.

The Premier League fixture between Manchester City and Manchester United kicks off at 4:30pm on Sunday at the Etihad.

A comprehensive policing operation will be in place throughout the day, not only at the stadium but also across transport networks, Manchester city centre, and other key locations where fans and members of the public may gather.

GMP made 16 arrests at the derby at the Etihad last season, while there were 10 arrests at the reverse fixture at Old Trafford in April.

Chief Superintendent Colette Rose, match commander for the fixture, said: “As with any major sporting event, we have worked closely with our partners including both clubs to deliver a robust and visible policing presence.

“Planning for a match is a complex process and doesn’t just start on the day, there are weeks and sometimes months of planning and each match is risk-assessed before the season starts.

“Our aim is to ensure that everyone can enjoy the match safely and without disruption.

“We encourage anyone attending the match to speak to police officers or stadium security if they witness or experience any form of abuse or criminal behaviour.

“For those travelling on public transport or watching in public places, our officers will be on hand and approachable - please feel confident in speaking with them about any concerns.

“We are proud to support two world-class football clubs here in Manchester, and we know their passionate fans will contribute to a fantastic atmosphere, and wish both teams the very best at the weekend.”
