A man in his 30s has been arrested after police recovered a stolen vehicle following a pursuit through Wythenshawe.
The suspect was arrested on suspicion of burglary and dangerous driving after officers tracked a stolen Mercedes CLC into Greater Manchester.
Police said the driver allegedly reached speeds of more than 100mph and drove through red lights before crashing into a tree.
The incident ended in Benchill after the driver left the vehicle and was detained by officers.
Stolen car tracked into Greater Manchester
Greater Manchester Police said they were alerted by colleagues in Cheshire that a Mercedes CLC had been stolen and was travelling towards Greater Manchester.
Officers from the Tactical Vehicle Interception Unit located the vehicle and pursued it on Hollyhedge Road.
Police allege the driver travelled at speeds exceeding 100mph and drove through red traffic lights.
Before the pursuit ended, officers said the driver almost struck a pedestrian.
The vehicle then turned onto Fancroft Road before crashing into a tree on Haveley Road in Benchill.
Driver arrested at the scene
After the crash, police said the driver left the vehicle but was quickly detained by officers.
The man remains in custody for questioning.
Inspector Tony Allt from the Tactical Vehicle Interception Unit said: “This was a high-speed and potentially dangerous incident which almost saw an innocent member of the public injured while out on the street.
“The driver of the Mercedes showed complete disregard for the safety of others, driving at speeds of 100mph across a usually busy junction – thankfully – at that time of the morning, there were no other vehicles on the road.
“Our collaborative work with other forces that we are linked with was clear to see last night, we acted upon Cheshire’s information and arrested the suspect all within a few hours.
“The suspect remains in custody, and it is another person off the streets who thinks they are above the law.”
