A Macclesfield man has been jailed after police found terrorist material and materials which could potentially be used to make a homemade explosive device at his home.

Jonathan Wilson, of Abbey Road, was sentenced to 12 months in prison at Manchester Crown Court on Wednesday 16th September 2026.

The 49-year-old had previously pleaded guilty to nine counts of possessing or collecting information likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism under Section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

Police said officers from Cheshire Constabulary searched Wilson's home in December 2023 after reports he had bought prohibited chemicals without a licence.

They found materials which could potentially be used to create a homemade explosive device, along with a large amount of literature giving advice on how to carry out a terrorist attack.

A cordon was put in place while the scene was examined and later declared safe.

Counter Terrorism Policing North West said the response involved Cheshire Constabulary, the fire service and explosive ordnance disposal teams.

Officers also found schematics for a 3D printed gun during the search.

Police said Wilson's conviction for possessing the schematics is believed to be one of the first prosecuted under the Terrorism Act.

He will have an extended licence period of 12 months after his release.

He will also be subject to a Serious Crime Prevention Order for five years and notification requirements under the Terrorism Act for 10 years.

Detective Chief Superintendent Jon Chadwick, Head of Counter Terrorism Policing North West, said Wilson had collected a cache of literature which would be useful to somebody preparing to commit an act of terrorism.

Police said they do not believe Wilson was actively trying to build an explosive device, but said the items found at his address caused serious concern.
