Record-breaking emergency call demand tests Greater Manchester police
Response teams praised for their swift actions and professionalism
Greater Manchester Police faced unprecedented demand during Response Policing Week, with emergency calls reaching their highest levels in 2026. On Saturday alone, the contact centre handled 2,129 emergency calls out of a total of 4,932 contacts in a single day. This surge tested the capabilities of the region's dedicated response officers.
Despite the hectic climate, the majority of grade 1 incidents benefited from commendably fast response times, averaging just over seven minutes. Similarly, officers addressed 2,203 grade 2 incidents with an impressive attendance rate.
Stories from the front line
Response officers demonstrated exceptional professionalism throughout the week. Among them, PC Fairbrother-Wilcock of Wigan was celebrated for his bravery in a high-risk situation, while PC Nuttall of Rochdale exemplified frontline learning and mentorship in handling fast-paced operations.
Police Dog Bren retired after one final shift, marking the bond between animal and handler in crucial policing roles. The week also spotlighted teamwork among officers such as PCs Eves, Mohamed, and others who effectively handled serious assaults and secured evidence during demanding shifts.
Collaboration and impact
Efforts extended beyond emergency response: Manchester North district officers worked alongside NHS staff to de-escalate a welfare incident at a hospital, safeguarding a vulnerable individual. Proactive operations, like the recovery of a stolen vehicle on 24th April, resulted in arrests and charges, showcasing the responsiveness integral to maintaining public safety.
Leadership and reflection
Assistant Chief Constable Matt Boyle, National Lead for Response Policing, praised the exceptional dedication of the response teams:
“Response officers demonstrated their professionalism and integrity in moments when people are most vulnerable... They remain the frontline of safety and the foundation on which confidence in our service is built.”
Response Policing Week highlighted the critical role of response teams in serving the community, reaffirming public trust through their constant dedication and courage.
