GMP step up drink-driving checks after England V Mexico
The force says some supporters may still have alcohol in their system from overnight celebrations
Greater Manchester Police have launched drink and drug-driving checks across the region this morning, reminding supporters who celebrated England's victory over Mexico about the dangers of driving after a night out.
Greater Manchester Police said: "With the match taking place later in the evening, some people may continue drinking into the early hours. While you may feel fit to drive the following morning, alcohol can remain in your system for longer than you think and you could still be over the legal limit."
Checks underway
Officers are carrying out the roadside checks as part of efforts to keep the roads safe following the match.
Greater Manchester Police said: "In Greater Manchester, plans are in place to help keep people safe, and policing the match will be no different to how we police any other busy Saturday night."
They add though that across England's matches so far in the tournament, there have been very few incidents at licensed premises, reflecting the responsible way supporters have enjoyed the event.
The safety message
Greater Manchester Police said: "Our message is simple: enjoy the occasion, drink responsibly, look after your friends and help ensure everyone can celebrate safely."
