Fifteen people in hospital after bus crashes into bridge in Eccles

Emergency services declared a major incident following the collision on Barton Lane

Fifteen people were taken to hospital after a bus collided with a bridge in Eccles, prompting a major emergency response.

North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) received a 999 call at 3.06pm today (21st July) following reports of a serious road traffic collision involving a bus at the junction of Barton Lane and Trafford Road. A major incident was declared shortly afterwards.

In total, 15 patients were treated at the scene and transported to Salford Royal and Manchester Royal Infirmary hospitals.

NWAS confirmed: “The trust dispatched a number of resources, including ten emergency ambulances, advanced paramedics, our Hazard Area Response Team (HART) and colleagues from North West Air Ambulance.” The first emergency crew arrived at 3.10pm.

The major incident status was stood down at 4.22pm, but ambulance teams remained on scene supporting the ongoing operation.

A spokesperson said: “We are currently assessing the situation and working with other members of the emergency services. Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible.”

Greater Manchester Police said they were responding to “a collision between a bus and a bridge at the junction of Barton Road and Trafford Road in Eccles.”

Road closures remain in place and members of the public are being asked to avoid the area.
