Extra police powers granted in Stretford after machete chase
It comes after a man was chased and threatened with a weapon in Marple Grove
Extra police powers have been authorised in a defined area of Stretford following a disturbance on Saturday night (8th August).
Greater Manchester Police said officers responded to an incident on Marple Grove at around 8.45pm, where several men were seen chasing another man and attempting to attack him.
At least one of them is believed to have been carrying a machete.
The man managed to escape without injury.
No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.
Section 60 powers in place
A Section 60 and Section 60AA order has been authorised for the area.
A Section 60 gives officers extra powers to stop and search people within the defined area and timeframe.
A Section 60AA allows officers to require people to remove face coverings being used to disguise their identity.
The authority was granted at 10pm on Saturday and will run for a 24-hour period until 10pm on Sunday 9th August.
We're told it will be reviewed throughout the day and extended if necessary.
Police response
Chief Inspector Justin Woodward, from GMP's Trafford district, said: "This order has been implemented to provide officers with extra powers to tackle these sort of vile actions, which will never be tolerated.
"This could have easily led to serious injury or worse, and it is right that our officers in the area have these powers to stop-search and ask people to remove face coverings. Ultimately, this is to deter and prevent any further criminality.
"You will see extra officers in the area and I would urge anyone with any information or issues to please get in touch with us."
