Derbyshire fire stations targeted by thieves
The county's Fire and Rescue Service says lifesaving operations are being put at risk
Last updated 17th May 2026
Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service is warning thieves are increasingly targeting fire stations in the county, stealing essential lifesaving equipment.
Officials say a concerning trend is emerging and impacting the area's ability to respond to emergencies.
The most recent incident occurred at Whaley Bridge Fire Station, where vital hydraulic gear, including a power pack, hoses, cutters, spreaders, and hydraulic ram, valued between £20,000 and £25,000, was stolen.
The break-in happened between 8am and midnight yesterday (Saturday 16th May 2026), with entry forced through a window.
Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service Group Manager Nic Lacey expressed concern over the thefts, saying:
“Not only does this equipment have a high monetary value, but the real value in this equipment is the role it plays in saving lives, specifically at road traffic collisions where this type of equipment is essential.
“Tragically this is the second time Whaley Bridge Fire Station has been targeted by thieves and is one of several thefts impacting Derbyshire fire stations since 2019.
"This is also a national issue with these thefts affecting fire services across the UK.
“While the Service has made improvements to its station security, we would like to ask the public to continue to be vigilant and help us by reporting any suspicious activity at any fire station.”
Investigation Underway
Derbyshire Police has begun its investigation into the Whaley Bridge theft, collaborating with the Fire Service to track down those responsible.
Anyone present in the area during the crime is being urged to come forward, particularly if they have CCTV or dashcam footage that could assist in the investigation.
Anyone reporting information is asked to quote the reference number 26000283838.
