Two primary schools in Bolton are set to introduce the 'school streets' initiative aimed at enhancing safety for students travelling to and from school.

Starting on 5th May, Kearsley West Primary School will implement controlled access at Primrose Street during afternoon school hours. St Bede’s Primary Academy will follow on 18th May, managing access to Hurst Street and Back Morris Green Lane during peak times in the morning and afternoon.

Benefits and trial success

The initiative means restricted access to nearby streets while schools are open, with Bolton Council noting the potential benefits of reduced air pollution and traffic congestion. Residents, workers, school staff, and emergency responders retain access with oversight by school staff and trained volunteers.

The concept was trialled successfully at four Bolton schools in March, garnering over 85% positive feedback from forums and surveys. Improved child safety, reduced congestion, and easier road crossing were noted as key advantages.

Addressing road safety

The focus on safer school travel comes as statistics show the most dangerous travel times for children coincide with school drop-off and pick-up hours, between 8 am to 9 am and 3 pm to 7 pm.

With nearly half of primary school children and a quarter of secondary school students driven to school, the initiative promises to enhance air quality and alleviate traffic pressure.

Almost 50 schools in Greater Manchester and over 700 in London have adopted school streets, signaling a successful approach to safer, active commuting for children.

Bolton Council spokesperson emphasised the initiative's importance:

“Children love getting to and from school under their own steam and it’s never too early for them to enjoy being active... School Streets have proved successful from Edinburgh to London and across Greater Manchester. Now it’s the turn of children in Bolton to benefit.”

The introduction of school streets marks an important step in prioritising child safety and environmental well-being in Bolton.
