Barcelona confirm £65.4 million signing of Rodri from Manchester City
The Spain captain has signed a four-year deal with the LaLiga champions
Barcelona have announced the signing of Spain captain Rodri from Manchester City.
The 30-year-old has committed to the Catalan club on a four-year contract, running until 30th June 2030.
He completed the £65.4million move on Tuesday after passing a medical, with a formal presentation pencilled in for Wednesday.
Player of the tournament
Rodri was named player of the tournament in Spain's World Cup triumph this summer.
He had entered the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium and was the subject of interest from both Barcelona and their Spanish rivals Real Madrid.
Barcelona had seen an opening offer of £40million rejected last week and failed with an increased bid before reaching an agreement over the weekend.
Seven seasons at City
Rodri spent seven seasons with Manchester City, helping them win the Premier League on four occasions.
He also scored the only goal when City edged out Inter Milan in the 2023 Champions League final.
The former Atletico Madrid player won the Ballon d'Or the following year, but by the time he was presented with the trophy he was sidelined with an anterior cruciate ligament injury which ruled him out of most of the 2024-25 campaign.
Further hamstring and groin problems then limited him to 33 appearances in Pep Guardiola's final campaign in charge.
City reshape their midfield
City had hoped to keep Rodri, with manager Enzo Maresca describing him as a "top player" and saying, "All the teams need Rodri" after the Community Shield.
However, they were unable to persuade him to stay and sign a new contract.
City have already undergone major changes in midfield this summer, spending £116million on Elliot Anderson, while agreeing a deal to sell Tijjani Reijnders to Al Qadisah.
They have also been linked with Lille's Ayyoub Bouaddi and Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez.
What Barcelona said
"Barcelona and Manchester City have reached an agreement for Rodri, who is committing to the Catalan club until June 30 2030," a statement on Barcelona's website said.
