Parents call for more support in London protest

Mums and Dad's calling for better support for parents have held a protest in central London

The first ever Parent Strike saw campaigners attend protests around the UK with events in Edinburgh and Glasgow , Cardiff and also Belfast.

The campaign, which is organised by The Dad Shift and Mother Pukka, is calling for changes including flexible working by default and paternity leave set at six weeks for at least 90% of pay, as a UK Government review on parental leave nears its final stages.

Campaigners say change is necessary to make parenting sustainable in the modern world, when most parents are working full-time and still struggling financially.

Speaking to our reporter in London, parents Katie and Tom told us they were allowed longer to be at home

"It's the thing that stopped me becoming mentally ill, it gave me that support, it helped us transition from one to two children" said Katie

Tom added; "it was invaluable, I was so lucky to get that time with the children and it just pays dividends for years to come."
