Homes evacuated after large maisonette fire in east London
20 residents have spent the night at a rest centre in Clapton.
Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters tackled a blaze at a block of maisonettes in east London, the London Fire Brigade (LFB) has said.
The LFB received the first of 65 calls about a fire in Mount Pleasant Lane in Clapton, Hackney, just after 8pm on Tuesday.
The fire, which produced a “significant amount of smoke”, was brought under control just before 11pm.
Firefighters searched the building and helped one resident to safety, the fire service said.
One person was assessed by emergency services at the scene but did not require hospital treatment.
Rest Centre
Some 20 residents are thought to have been affected by the fire, with a rest centre set up nearby.
Station commander Tom Sharp said: “The fire was producing a significant amount of smoke.
“We advised people in the local area to keep their windows and doors closed due to smoke travel.
“This advice has now been lifted.
“A rest centre has been set up locally for around 20 residents impacted by this fire.
“We have officers and our community engagement team working alongside the local authority and other partner agencies to support these residents.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
