A faith leader in London has been convicted of 21 offences, including nine counts of rape, over the span of 11 years.

Abdul Halim Khan, 54 and of Old Forde Road in London, used his position within his local community to abuse multiple women and girls.

The offences took place between 2004 and 2015.

Khan claimed to have spiritual powers, and used this to coerce and sexually abuse girls as young as 12.

He threatened harm on their families if they told anyone about the abuse.

Khan was found guilty on Friday, 13 February at Snaresbrook Crown Court.

Detective Sergeant Sara Yems, from the Metropolitan Police, said: "It shows remarkable strength for anyone to report abuse, especially when the abuser is believed to be a trusted figure.

“The seven woman who came forward have shown extraordinary courage in speaking with police and I hope they serve as inspiration to other victims and survivors.

“We remain absolutely committed to tackling violence against women and girls, targeting dangerous offenders and removing them from London’s streets.”

Khan has been remanded into custody, and will be sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Thursday, 14 May.
