Four taken to hospital following ebike fire in west London
Two children are among those being treated for smoke inhalation.
A fire believed to have been caused by the failure of a lithium battery in an e-scooter has prompted firefighters to issue a new safety warning about e-bikes and e-scooters in west London.
The blaze damaged half of a first-floor flat on Haymill Close in Perivale, completely destroying the front door and communal landing.
A smoke alarm alerted two adults and two children in the flat, who left the building before fire crews arrived.
Another four adults evacuated onto scaffolding and were guided to safety on the ground floor by firefighters.
Six people, including four adults and two children, were treated for smoke inhalation and taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service.
Investigation underway
London Fire Brigade's 999 Control officers responded after receiving the first of six calls about the fire at 12:11am.
Fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Ealing, Wembley, and Northolt stations attended the scene, with the situation under control by 1:59am.
Investigations suggest the fire started due to the failure of a lithium battery used in an e-scooter inside the flat.
Safety Advice for E-Bike and E-Scooter Owners
Following the incident, the London Fire Brigade is urging e-bike and e-scooter owners to review their safety guidelines.
A spokesperson said, “We encourage anyone who owns an e-bike or e-scooter, or is thinking about purchasing one, to take a look at all of our #ChargeSafe advice on our website to help keep themselves and those around them safer from these types of fires.”
