Boy dies after flat fire
Crews were called to Southwark address
A teenage boy has died in a blaze at a block of flats in London, which started next to a fire station.
It broke out in Southwark yesterday afternoon.
Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters tackled a blaze in a flat on the first floor of a six-storey building in Cooper’s Road, Southwark, adjacent to Old Kent Road Fire Station, on Wednesday.
One teenage boy left the property before firefighters arrived and was taken to hospital, while another died at the scene, the LFB said on Thursday.
The LFB took the first call just before 3pm, and crews from Dockhead, Dowgate, Shadwell and Whitechapel fire stations attended the scene. The blaze was brought under control just after 4.30pm.
A 64m turntable ladder appliance was sent from Old Kent Road Fire Station and arrived within six minutes of the call, an LFB spokesperson said.
The spokesperson added: “Another appliance from Old Kent Road was out at a different incident but did return to the scene of the incident later.”
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the LFB’s Fire Investigation Unit and the Metropolitan Police Service.
