Once officers established there was no emergency, the initial call was ended — but the man is alleged to have phoned back 11 more times.

The number was subsequently blocked, but he is then believed to have contacted the ambulance service, asking to be put through to the police.

The alleged calls spanned a three-hour period between 6pm and 9pm.

A 25-year-old was arrested on suspicion of persistently misusing a public communications network to cause annoyance and remains in custody.
