A 17-year-old girl is fighting for her life in hospital
A 17-year-old girl is in a critical condition in hospital after an e-scooter and a van crashed in Liverpool city centre.
Merseyside Police said the crash happened on Great George Street at around 1.20am this morning (Sunday 26th July).
Two 17-year-old girls were riding the e-scooter when it was involved in a crash with a Mercedes Vito, the force said.
Emergency services went to the scene and one of the girls was taken to hospital, where she remains critically ill.
Two people arrested
The second teenager was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, drug driving and driving without insurance.
Police said the driver of the Mercedes Vito did not stop at the scene.
The vehicle was later found nearby and a 57-year-old man from Liverpool was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving and failing to stop.
Both remain in custody.
The force said its investigation is at a very early stage and detectives are continuing their enquiries.
What police have said
Detective Sergeant Simon Duffy from the Matrix Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: "This was a very serious collision that has resulted in a teenage girl in hospital where she is currently in a critical condition.
"As part of our initial inquiries, we have arrested two people and they both remain in custody where they will be questioned about their possible involvement.
"In the meantime, I'd like to take this opportunity to appeal to any possible witnesses.
"We know this happened very early this morning, but if anyone saw what occurred or were driving through the area just before the incident, then please get in touch.
"I would also ask anyone who travelled through other parts of the city and saw two girls on an e-scooter to let us know.
"Similarly, if you live or work in the area and have CCTV or smart doorbell footage, please take a moment to review to see if you captured anything that could assist our investigation.
"Even the smallest of details could be vital, so please don't hesitate to get in touch and let our team review your footage."
