A 16-year-old has been arrested following an assault on a teenager in Liverpool city centre earlier this week.

The incident occurred around 7.15 pm on Monday at Chavasse Park when a 17-year-old male was attacked by a group of youths.

The victim suffered a minor slash wound to his arm and swelling to his head and received hospital treatment.

He has since been discharged.

On Tuesday, police arrested a 16-year-old male from Liverpool on suspicion of affray.

He has been released on police bail with conditions preventing him from entering the city centre and surrounding areas while further enquiries are conducted.

Detective Chief Inspector Stephen Ball described the attack as targeted and mentioned that the incident was distressing for the victim.

He acknowledged the impact on those who witnessed the assault, urging them not to share a circulating video of the incident while investigations are ongoing.

He appealed for witnesses or individuals who captured the event on mobile phones to come forward.

DCI Ball also emphasised the seriousness with which Merseyside Police handles knife crime, stating that robust action will be taken against anyone found possessing a knife.

He urged the public to educate themselves and their family members on the dangers of knife crime, adding that ongoing efforts to address those involved in knife crime and gang activities continue.
