Suspected drug smuggler arrested after joint police operation
The suspect was wanted by police after a previous interception in Newcastle which saw the seizures of over 30 kilos of cannabis
A 44-year-old man has been arrested at Liverpool airport on suspicion of drug smuggling, following a joint operation by the North East Regional Organised Crime Unit (NEROCU), UK Border Force, and Merseyside Police.
The arrest occurred on Saturday, 25th July, as part of a targeted operation that resulted in the seizure of over 50 kilos of drugs, including cannabis.
Previously, the man was wanted by police after officers intercepted a shipment in Newcastle containing over 30 kilos of cannabis.
During the operation at Liverpool airport, the suspect was found in possession of an additional 20 kilos of cannabis.
The man has been bailed while investigations are ongoing.
Praise for Joint Police Effort
Sergeant Neil Lovat from NEROCU’s Disruption Team highlighted the success of collaboration between partner agencies.
Sgt Lovat said: “I want to thank everyone involved; this has been an excellent display of what can be achieved when partner agencies work together to take action against illegal drug operations.
“We will continue to work with our partners, under Operation Sentinel, to dismantle the criminal groups who try to profit from the sale and supply of illegal drugs and inflicting harm to communities.”
