Man charged after two police officers assaulted in St Helens
The officers were injured after confronting a driver mounting the pavement
A 53-year-old man has been charged after two police officers were assaulted while on duty in St Helens.
The incident happened on Thursday 15th May, when officers attending an unrelated matter on Pennine Drive witnessed a white van being driven dangerously, with all four wheels mounted on the pavement for approximately 50 metres.
When the officers approached the vehicle and attempted to take control of it, the driver tried to place the keys back in the ignition.
As officers intervened, the man became aggressive, pushing both a male and female officer and grabbing the male officer by the neck, ripping his shirt in the process.
Both officers sustained minor injuries during the altercation. The man was quickly detained at the scene.
Thomas Bolton, of Cooper Avenue, St Helens, was arrested and later charged with two counts of common assault of an emergency worker.
Bolton appeared at Liverpool Magistrates Court on Friday 16th May, where he was granted bail. He is due to return to court on 24th June.
