The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for snow and ice across Wales and North West England from Sunday evening, 5th November, through to Monday morning, 6th November, with possible disruption to travel predicted.

The affected areas include Blackburn with Darwen, Blackpool, Cheshire East, Cheshire West and Chester, Greater Manchester, Halton, Lancashire, Merseyside, and Warrington.

Snow showers are forecast to move inland during Sunday evening, with inland areas seeing up to 3 cm of snow accumulation in many places and isolated spots reaching 5-8 cm, especially at higher altitudes.

Potential impact on travel and safety

According to the Met Office, roads and railways are likely to face disruptions, with longer journey times for buses, trains, and other vehicles.

Icy patches could develop on untreated roads, pavements, and cycle paths, increasing the risk of slips and falls.

To stay safe during snowy and icy weather, motorists are advised to prepare their vehicles with essentials like warm clothing, food, water, blankets, a torch, ice scrapers, de-icer, a warning triangle, high-visibility vests, and in-car phone chargers. Pedestrians and cyclists should favour main roads and pavements, which are more likely to have been treated.

Staying prepared

The Met Office recommends checking road conditions and public transport updates before embarking on a journey. Leaving the house earlier and planning your route to include less slippery roads can reduce the risk of accidents.

Forecasts and weather warnings are subject to change, so it is advised to stay updated on the latest weather information for your area.

It all started back in the 1990s, when a group of friends were sat in a pub, and came up with the idea as a way to poke fun at modern art after Tracey Emin's unmade bed was shortlisted for the Turner Prize. Organisers behind the much-celebrated part of West Country history are showcasing the very best from previous winners - with a sprinkling, too, of a few notable finalists, as they look to harbour-up entrants for the 2024 edition. They even hold the annual 'Turnips' - held, naturally, on the same night in December as the Turner Prize is awarded.
