The conservationist and national treasure Sir David Attenborough is celebrating his 100th birthday today.

Celebrations are being held across the region - including at Knowsley Safari, where they're allowing free entry for the day to anyone called David!

Chester Zoo are also paying tribute - they've released a video to mark the occasion

Cat Barton is Chester Zoo's policy lead for deforestation commodities and regenerative agriculture.

She led a project that made Chester the first sustainable palm oil city and that was chosen to feature on the Earthshot Prize documentary hosted by Prince William, and narrated by Sir David.

Cat said:

"He spoke about my work as I was on screen, the impact it had, the positive nature of the work, and the fact we're encouraging people to use sustainable palm oil to stop deforestation.

"Just to have my name in there, and Sir David name-checking me on my work, just gave me such an enormous sense of pride that I'd come full circle from watching him on wildlife documentaries to being on one myself and him speaking about my work - it was one of those moments I'll never forget."

Sir David has visited Chester Zoo before - he came in 2013 to film part of his David Attenborough's Natural Curiosities series.

Cat added:

"I think the fact he's still doing all of this work and championing conservation and wildlife nature at the grand old age of 100 is so inspiring.

"For me personally, I knew from an early age I wanted to work with wildlife and what I take from Sir David Attenborough is that if my work isn't contributing to wildlife at the end, then it needs to change direction. That's my goal, to protect wildlife and absolutely I will have got a lot of that inspiration from him."
