Drivers on the M6 in Cheshire are facing delays of around 90 minutes after a serious crash involving a car and a van closed the motorway at Junction 20.

National Highways said there are severe delays in both directions, with very heavy congestion building back towards Junction 18 northbound and Junction 23 southbound.

National Highways said Cheshire Police made it aware of the crash at about 3.03am this morning.

Cheshire Police and emergency services attended the scene, along with National Highways traffic officers.

The closure remains in place for clear-up, recovery and emergency barrier repairs, National Highways said.

Diversions

Traffic in both directions is leaving the motorway at Junction 20.

Drivers are then rejoining via the entry slip road at Cliff Lane and Lymm Interchange.

National Highways is asking anyone whose planned route is affected to allow extra journey time.

It says drivers may wish to plan ahead, re-route or even delay their journey.
