The Royal Iris of the Mersey is set to retire, marking the end of an era for the ferry that has been a prominent presence on the River Mersey for over 60 years.

On the 31st March, the vessel will take its final journey, concluding decades of service that saw generations of passengers crossing the waters between Liverpool and Wirral.

To honour the occasion, a farewell celebration will take place this weekend (28th and 29th March), inviting visitors to capture photographic memories and share personal stories of their time aboard the ferry.

The Royal Iris has been more than just a mode of transport; it has created lasting memories for many commuters, families, and tourists who have travelled on its decks.

Cllr Steve Foulkes, Chair of the Combined Authority Transport Committee, encouraged the public to participate in the send-off, saying: “The Royal Iris of the Mersey is more than just a ferry - she’s part of who we are.

“For decades she’s carried families, commuters and visitors across our iconic river, creating memories that will last a lifetime. As she prepares to retire, we celebrate not just the vessel herself, but everything she represents about our region’s proud maritime story.

"I’d encourage everyone to come along, share their memories and give her the fantastic farewell she deserves.”

As the Royal Iris prepares to dock permanently, the organisers emphasise the significance of this moment as a "final boarding call" for an authentic piece of Mersey history.

Although Royal Iris will cease operations, the continuity of ferry services will be maintained with Snowdrop and, later this year, the introduction of the Royal Daffodil, the first new ferry in 60 years.

This progression maintains an 800-year tradition of ferry services on the River Mersey.
