A woman has been arrested after £20,000 in cash was found during a stop and search in St Helens.
At around 11.20am on Tuesday 19 May, Merseyside Police officers noticed a woman acting suspiciously on Elephant Lane. When they stopped the woman they noticed a strong smell of cannabis and searched her handbag where they found approximately £20,000 in a Royal Mail package.
Officers then searched an address in St Helens and found a large bag of cannabis.
A 43-year-old woman from St Helens was arrested on suspicion of possession of criminal property.
She was taken to a police station in Merseyside where she was released under investigation.
Detective Inspector James Rotheram said: “Thanks to our officers who were on patrol in St Helens a huge amount of cash was seized which could have been used to supply illicit drugs and cause serious harm on our streets.
“These types of crimes are committed solely to provide a profit, which often causes violence within our communities and brings hardship and distress to our residents. These crimes are unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
“By carrying out stop and searches, warrants, land searches, and delivering targeted operations our officers can disrupt those involved in drug supply and ensure they are brought to justice before the courts.
"If you know of people in your area involved in such criminality, help us protect your communities by telling us what you know so we can take positive action.”
