A watchdog is to investigate the death of a man, hours after he was arrested by Merseyside Police.

Officers were called to reports of a man acting erratically in a street on Sunday morning (06 April), where the arrest took place.

It is understood the man suffered a medical episode and was taken to hospital, where he died a short time later.

Merseyside Police said specialist officers were supporting his family.

Deaths in custody are routinely referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
