Anyone across Merseyside who got a bike for Christmas is being urged to get them registered and security checked.

A host of bike marking events are being held this month, including at more than 25 secondary schools.

Officers will be security marking them, registering them on the national database, and offering advice on locking and protecting them.

Inspector Cheryl McKeegan, Youth Prevention and Safer Schools, said:

"We know that many young people rely on their bikes to get to school or meet friends, and losing a bike to theft can have a huge impact on their independence.

"By delivering bike marking sessions directly in secondary schools, we’re giving students a really easy way to protect their property, while providing reassurance to parents and carers.

"These sessions also open up conversations with young people about keeping themselves and their belongings safe, which is a key part of our work in schools."

In the last year, more than 1,500 bikes have been registered during events in schools, churches, supermarkets and in working with local bike retailers.
