Merseyside Police has reported over 277 arrests for drink and drug driving offences during December as part of Operation Limit.

Figures released today, 18th December, show that 57 of the arrests were alcohol-related, while 211 involved drug driving.

This marks a 19% increase compared to arrests made at the same time in 2024.

Increased public cooperation

Chief Inspector Stuart McIver from the Roads Policing Unit revealed that Merseyside residents are showing strong support for the operation.

"Limit is, by far, one of the most publicly supported policing operations we run," McIver said, adding that people have been actively reporting drug and drink drivers to police.

As part of the campaign, police are carrying out regular stop checks in hotspot areas across Merseyside.

Breathalysers and drug wipes are being deployed across all policing strands during the Winter of Action.

McIver emphasised the force’s determination to tackle drug driving: "If arresting hundreds of people is what it takes to get those selfish individuals to make more responsible choices, that’s exactly what we’ll do."

Merseyside Police is encouraging anyone with suspicions about drink or drug driving to call 999.

Operation Limit will remain active throughout December.
