A 35-year-old man from Merseyside has been sentenced to 16 months in prison after a violent two-day spree in Ellesmere Port.

Jonathan Hughes, from Rock Ferry, Birkenhead, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court on 20th April where he admitted to assaulting a man and causing damage to property.

Hughes' actions began on 2nd December 2025 when he entered a shop on Station Road, became aggressive, and damaged items such as tables and electronics.

After leaving the shop, Hughes was involved in a physical altercation with a 39-year-old man at his Westminster Road address. Hughes headbutted the victim and attacked him with a wine bottle.

The following day, Hughes returned to Westminster Road and smashed windows with a shovel before fleeing, prompting a police investigation.

Hughes was arrested on 12th December and subsequently admitted to some of the offences. He pleaded guilty before his trial.

He has been sentenced to one year and four months in prison and received a three-year Restraining Order.

Detective Constable Jenni Potter, who led the investigation, said: "Jonathan Hughes caused an untold amount of damage and misery to a number of people following his two-day rampage across Ellesmere Port, so I welcome the fact that he is set to spend the next 16 months behind bars. I hope the victims feel that they have received peace of mind and justice from this result."

"Even upon his release, which will not be until the latter half of 2027, Hughes will remain continually monitored under the terms of a three-year Restraining Order."

"Should he choose to break these terms upon his release, we will take swift action and will be promptly returned to our custody."
