Man taken to hospital after M53 police chase

The bike ended up going the wrong way down the motorway

A man has been taken to hospital after a police car and a motorbike crashed on the M53 in Wallasey on Sunday 22nd March.

Merseyside Police said the rider was taken to hospital by ambulance for assessment of serious injuries after the crash on the northbound slip road at Junction 2, Moreton Spur.

The motorway has been shut in both directions at Junction 2 and drivers are being told to use other routes.

What happened

Merseyside Police said the motorbike first came to the attention of patrols just after 3.15pm on Love Lane in Wallasey.

The force said the bike was suspected to be stolen and uninsured.

One male got off the bike and was detained at the scene.

Police said the bike then made off from patrols and was ridden by a male against traffic towards the M53.

At around 3.30pm, a police vehicle and the bike crashed on the M53 northbound slip road at Junction 2.

Road closures and investigation

The M53 is shut in both directions at Junction 2 at Moreton Spur.

Drivers are being advised to seek alternative routes.

Merseyside Police said a mandatory referral will be made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct due to the circumstances.
