A man from Moreton has been jailed for nine years after stabbing a disabled man in a wheelchair several times in Woodchurch.

40-year-old Glyn Holland, of Meadfoot Road in Moreton, was sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court on Monday 5th October.

He was jailed for nine years for Section 18 wounding with intent.

He was also jailed for 12 months, to run concurrently, for possessing a knife in a public place.

Holland pleaded guilty to all of his offences.

On Thursday 25th June, Holland approached the man, who was with his friends on the grassed area opposite the Co-op on Hoole Road.

He stabbed him several times with a kitchen knife.

The victim was taken to hospital, where he needed surgery for his injuries.

How police found him

Police said a significant investigation uncovered CCTV footage showing the assault.

The footage also showed Holland walking through an alleyway to the rear of the Hoole Road shops shortly afterwards.

Holland was arrested on Glebelands Road in Moreton with blood on his hands and forehead.

Officers later found a bloodstained kitchen knife in an industrial bin in the area.

Impact on the victim

In a victim impact statement read out in court, a family member of the victim said:

"The psychological impact this has had on the victim has been immense.

"The serious assault has caused psychological trauma and triggered PTSD to a vulnerable man who already struggled both physically and mentally learning to adjust to a new life.

"He now feels more vulnerable than he did do before this happened to him.

"He does not like to be left alone and he gets emotional when we are saying goodbye.

"The impact that this has had on his family is huge."

Police response

Speaking after the sentencing, Detective Sergeant Sheena Ayrton said:

"Holland's violent and unprovoked attack left his victim with three stab wounds to his stomach, which were deemed life threatening.

"The attack has had a detrimental impact on his victim and his family.

"I would like to thank our uniformed officers and detectives who worked together on the day of the attack to find and arrest Holland for his crimes.

"I hope Holland's sentencing provides justice for his victim and his family and reassures them that we will thoroughly investigate any crime that causes vulnerable people in our community such serious harm and suffering."
