Man injured in a dog attack in Birkdale
Armed police shoot one dog after the incident on Lynton Road
Police were called to reports of a dog attack in Birkdale today (Tuesday 7th April), leaving a man in his 30s injured and requiring hospital treatment.
Officers were contacted at 10.45am following reports that two dogs were loose on Lynton Road. During the incident, the man sustained injuries to his stomach and arm. He is being treated in hospital and is not believed to be seriously injured.
It was also reported that a second man, believed to be in his 70s, was approached aggressively by the dogs but did not suffer any injuries.
Armed police respond to incident
Armed police officers attended the scene alongside specialist dog handlers. To prevent further harm and stop the threat to the public, one of the dogs was shot at the scene.
A police firearm was discharged during the incident.
The second dog has since been detained by dog patrol officers.
Police have confirmed the dogs are not believed to be a banned breed. Officers remain in the area carrying out further enquiries.
There is not believed to be any ongoing threat to the wider public.
