A 37-year-old man from Birkenhead, Andrew Roberts, has been sentenced to over five years in prison for stabbing his father last December.

Roberts appeared at Liverpool Crown Court on 19th June and pleaded guilty to Section 18 wounding with intent for the attack, which took place inside a house on Big Meadow Road in Woodchurch.

On 16th December, officers responded to reports of a 56-year-old man suffering a chest injury, treated subsequently in hospital.

Initially charged with attempted murder, Roberts faced trial after his Section 18 assault plea was refused by the Crown Prosecution Service, leading to a hung jury result last month.

Today, he was sentenced to five and a half years for wounding with intent.

Detective Sergeant Ciara Cross described the case as "awful," emphasizing the distress caused to the victim by his own son.

DS Cross hopes the time spent behind bars will prompt Roberts to reflect on his actions and their impact.

She further highlighted the devastating effects knives can have, stressing the commitment to tackling knife crime through various proactive measures.

Anyone with information on weapons in their community is urged to contact Merseyside Police or report anonymously via Crimestoppers.
