A man and a dog have died following a house fire in Wallasey.

Firefighters were called to a semi-detached house on Beaufort Drive at 8.38pm on Monday, 19th October.

Crews arrived at 8.42pm to find the ground floor well alight, with smoke coming from the upper floor, according to Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service.

Three fire engines went to the scene.

Six firefighters wearing breathing apparatus went inside the house to search it and tackle the flames.

The man and the dog were both rescued from the house, and the fire was put out at 9.06pm.

Emergency first aid was given to the man, but he was pronounced dead by paramedics before reaching Arrowe Park Hospital.

Fire crews tried to resuscitate the dog, but it died at the scene.

Merseyside Police and the ambulance service also attended.

Investigation underway

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and Merseyside Police are carrying out a joint investigation to establish the cause of the fire.

Area Manager Ged Knock, from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, said: "This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the occupier at this difficult time.

"A joint Merseyside Police and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service investigation is underway to establish the cause of the fire.

"As an attendee at scene, I can confirm that fire crews worked hard in extremely difficult circumstances to perform both rescues and all three blue light agencies contributed with their all to preserve life.

"We are conscious of the impact on the community and will conduct a full reassurance programme for the area."
