Man charged after St Helens theft

A man has been charged with several offences, after a theft in St Helens.
At around 2.25pm, on Friday 23 January, police received a report that a van had been stolen on Jackson Street.
Officers attended and were able to track the vehicle to Recreation Street, where a male suspect attempted to drive away.
During the incident, an officer tried to open the van door, but the vehicle went forward which dragged him along the ground before it collided with a police car. The officer didn’t sustain any serious injuries.
Danny Smith, 29, of Church Road, St Helens, was arrested and charged with the following offences:
Theft of a motor vehicle
Dangerous driving
Driving whilst disqualified
Failing to provide a specimen for analysis
Attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent to do grievous bodily harm
Using a motor vehicle on a road/public place without third party insurance
Smith was also charged with theft, in relation to a separate incident in October last year, when items were stolen from Morrisons, in St Helens.
He appeared at Liverpool Magistrate's Court and was remanded to next appear at Liverpool Crown Court on Monday 23 February.
