Five people have reportedly been injured after being attacked at a hospital in Newton-Le-Willows.

Merseyside Police received a report just after 12pm that a man went into Newton Community Hospital to ask for an appointment.

It's believed that request was denied - and when he was asked to leave, he became increasingly agitated and damaged a counter before assaulting several people inside with a weapon.

Paramedics are treating those injured, they're not thought to be life-threatening.

St Helens Neighbourhood Superintendent Sarah Rotherham said:

"We were called to reports of a man behaving aggressively at the hospital who had assaulted a number of people. Officers attended immediately and the male was swiftly located and arrested. Paramedics attended at the hospital and carried out first aid to those who had been injured.

"I would like to take this opportunity for anyone who witnessed this incident at the hospital to contact us with any information."

A 20-year-old man, originally from Afghanistan, is being questioned on suspicion of five counts of Section 18 wounding, affray, and criminal damage.

People are advised to avoid the area while police enquiries are ongoing.
