Man arrested after car driven wrong way before M53 crash in Wirral

The driver reportedly fled on foot after hitting central barrier in early hours

A man has been arrested after a car was reportedly driven on the wrong side of the road in Wirral before crashing on the M53 motorway in the early hours of Wednesday 15th April.

At around 12.20am, a grey Toyota Yaris was seen travelling towards the motorway while failing to give way to other road users.

Officers carried out a tactical stop before the vehicle hit the central reservation near junction three.

The driver then ran from the scene but was quickly detained.

A bag of cannabis resin was found inside the car.

Arrest

A 29-year-old man from Birkenhead has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, driving while unfit through drink or drugs, and possession of a controlled drug.

He remains in police custody for questioning

The motorway was closed while emergency services dealt with the crash.

It has since reopened.

An investigation is ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

Officers are asking anyone with information or footage to come forward.

Anyone who has CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage showing a grey Toyota Yaris being driven in Wirral from midnight onwards is asked to contact Merseyside Police via social media or by calling 101, quoting reference 26000295079.
