Liverpool urges fans to avoid drink driving during World Cup festivities
City Council promotes safe choices to reduce alcohol-related harm
As anticipation for the World Cup heightens, Liverpool City Council is encouraging residents to plan ahead and steer clear of driving if they intend to drink during the celebrations.
With thousands expected to gather at pubs, bars, and homes to watch the matches, the Council warns that even one impaired decision could have life-changing consequences.
In 2024, more than 1,600 individuals were arrested in Liverpool for drink or drug driving, contributing to 36 impairment-linked collisions—half of which involved alcohol.
Statistics indicate that individuals aged 40 to 49 are most likely to be impaired drivers, with men more frequently found engaging in drink or drug driving than women.
National data indicates that 1 in 6 road fatalities are attributed to drink driving.
The Government's new Road Safety Strategy includes plans to review drink and drug driving laws, which may lead to tougher penalties and lower alcohol limits to curb reckless behaviour.
The effort is part of the city’s Vision Zero initiative for 2040, aimed at eliminating avoidable road fatalities and serious injuries.
Liverpool City Council also promotes its ‘Call It! Enjoy More, Drink Less’ campaign, advocating for responsible drinking and peer support while out with friends.
By encouraging residents to make safe choices, like planning their journey home wisely, the Council hopes to ensure enjoyable nights out and mitigate alcohol-related hazards.
