Liverpool looking to avoid more misery against Nottingham Forest

Arne Slot's men have scored only six goals in eight Premier League visits to Forest

Liverpool head to the City Ground on Sunday looking to avoid a double league defeat against Nottingham Forest for the first time in 63 years.

Not since 1962-63 - the last of only three in their history - have Forest won both league games against Liverpool in the same season but, following their 3-0 victory at Anfield in November, a repeat would not be totally unexpected.

Liverpool have scored only six goals in eight Premier League visits to Forest and not kept back-to-back clean sheets on the road in the league in over a year.

They have also not registered successive away league wins since September and head coach Arne Slot has lost two and drawn one of his three games against Forest.

It says much about Liverpool's struggles this season that Slot could not even definitively say the 3-0 humbling three months ago was their lowest point of the campaign.

"We had a few," said the Dutchman. "Burnley (at home) felt really, really tough, the 1-1. City (when they lost to two goals in the final six minutes) felt really hard as well because we played so well. We deserved so much more.

"Which other ones did we have? The first one (defeat) is always difficult, Palace away. Leeds was really tough, Bournemouth was really tough, all because it was in the last second of the games. Unbelievable.

"So sometimes being unlucky is hard, sometimes not getting what you deserve is hard.

"We've hardly lost a game of football where you can accept, 'OK, this one is acceptable'. Maybe City away (a 3-0 defeat) was probably the only one.

"That wasn't nice to experience, but was the one that was most deserved for us to lose."

Liverpool have only lost two of their last 19 matches in all competitions but there have been too many draws and underwhelming displays.

Recent weeks have seen an upturn in individual performances, with Dominik Szoboszlai's consistency supplemented by good form from summer signings Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez and Hugo Ekitike.

Midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has also started to rediscover some of his form, having started six of the last seven Premier League games after struggling for full fitness in the first half of the season.

"I think it's always a combination of factors, but fitness is a very important one," added Slot.

"The moment a player starts to play more and more games, he gets fitter and fitter.

"The second thing is if you bring in a few new players and a few leave, then you need new connections in the team so that takes a bit of time before everyone is ready, especially if you cannot constantly play with the same team.

"They were not fit enough to play every single time, every three days, so that takes then a little bit of time."
