Liverpool Cathedral’s tower is closed until further notice after a fire broke out yesterday afternoon.

Smoke could be seen coming from the top of the tower, and fire crews say it was caused by an electrical fault.

They've thanked emergency services for their 'invaluable' support.

Their update comes after they had hoped to reopen part of the site this weekend.

They said yesterday: "We are aware of the recent fire at our site and apologise for any concern or disruption this incident may have caused.

"We are cooperating with the relevant authorities as investigations are carried out to determine the cause of the incident.

"The Cathedral is now closed for today.

"We would like to sincerely thank the fire and rescue service for their swift response and support, which has been invaluable.

"We are expected to be open as normal tomorrow.

"However, the tower will remain closed."
