Unpaid carers across the UK are expressing feelings of being overlooked and undervalued as they continue to face significant social and financial hardships.

According to research by Talking Tube Feeding, while 41% of carers report that their role has enhanced their appreciation for life's moments, a staggering 92% have faced financial strain due to their responsibilities.

Carers provide essential daily support to those in need, often placing others' needs above their own. They admit to missing important personal events, such as family birthdays, medical appointments, and school events for their children due to their care duties.

For many, caring offers a sense of fulfilment; however, the emotional and physical toll is considerable. Two in five carers regularly experience exhaustion, 31% feel overwhelmed, and over 27% report ongoing stress.

The study also highlights that more support is urgently needed, as 26% of carers rarely receive outside help, leaving them isolated in their efforts.

Half of surveyed carers have reduced personal time, impacting social lives, sleep, and dating opportunities. Despite their dedication, 60% believe they are not properly recognised by society.

Financial pressures compound their difficulties, with 14% of carers struggling to afford essentials like rent and food.

We spoke to Amelia Christie from Liverpool, an unpaid carer to her son Oliver who has Congenital Heart Disease, Cerebral Palsy, Gastro Problems, Peg fed on a blended diet and Global Development delay.

" Carers should be paid, especially when we're in hospital. We did 6 weeks in hospital and we got no financial help at all. So many carers rely on charities."

To honour these unsung heroes, Talking Tube Feeding plans to launch its inaugural awards later this year, aiming to acknowledge the invaluable contributions made by carers.
