Club seeks new direction despite Slot’s successful tenure
Liverpool FC has confirmed the sacking of head coach Arne Slot as the club embarks on a search for new leadership to guide the team forward.
Slot, who joined Liverpool in June 2024, made a significant impact by securing the team's 20th league title in his debut season, a feat accomplished under challenging circumstances. He also led Liverpool to the Carabao Cup final and the last 16 of the Champions League, earning accolades as the LMA Manager of the Year.
Club statement
Liverpool praised Slot for his vital contributions and coaching excellence. In a statement, the club said: “The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC in the time that he has been with us has been significant, meaningful and – most importantly of all to supporters and ourselves – successful.”
However, acknowledging the need for a strategic shift, Liverpool noted: “We have collectively come to the conclusion that change is necessary in order for the club to keep moving forward. Again, it must be stressed that this is not a decision which has been reached lightly.”
Legacy
Slot’s tenure also included guiding Liverpool back to the Champions League for a second consecutive season in 2025-26, reaching the competition's quarter-finals.
The club celebrated his achievements, leading Liverpool through one of its most difficult periods, displaying humanity and compassion. The statement continued: “He also helped guide the club through one of the most difficult periods imaginable following the loss of Diogo. The compassion and humanity he showed throughout that time said a great deal about him as a person.”
The club concluded its statement by expressing gratitude and wishing Slot well: “Arne leaves with our gratitude, with a Premier League title to his name, and with the knowledge that he and his family will always be welcomed back at Anfield.”
