Kirkby introduces Designated Protest Area amid planned anti-immigration demonstration
New legislation aims at maintaining public order and preventing identity concealment
A Designated Protest Area has been established in Kirkby ahead of an anti-immigration protest scheduled for today, Saturday, 18th July.
This area will be in effect from 10am Saturday until 10am Sunday, 19th July.
The introduction is part of new legislation under Section 157 of Part 10 of the Crime and Policing Act 2026, which addresses identity concealment at protests.
Under this law, individuals within formally designated protest areas commit an offence if they use items to conceal identities.
Policing and Community Impact
Inspector Alec Cartledge explained that the legislation is geared toward preventing protest-related offenses while allowing legitimate use of face coverings.
"For policing purposes, these provisions are aimed at preventing offenders involved in protests from avoiding identification while preserving legitimate uses of face coverings," Cartledge said.
Inspector Cartledge assured that policing remains impartial, working to uphold the rights and safety of all communities.
Recognising potential community concerns, the police have informed locals of this new legislation.

While police powers to prevent protests are limited, conditions can be imposed to minimise serious disorder and disruption.
The Designated Protest Area aims to ensure protests proceed with minimal impact on Kirkby's residents and businesses.
