Kevin Walters named new head coach of St. Helens R.F.C.
Former Australian coach to lead club from 2027
St. Helens R.F.C. has announced the appointment of Kevin Walters as the club’s new Head Coach, starting after the 2026 Rugby League World Cup in Australia.
Walters, who has been serving as the Head Coach for Australia, will lead the club for three seasons, bringing his wealth of experience from coaching Queensland, NRL club Brisbane Broncos, and guiding Australia to a 3-0 victory over England in last Autumn's Ashes series.
In his playing career, Walters achieved significant success with six NRL Premiership wins, 20 State of Origin appearances, and played 11 test matches for Australia, including partaking in the 1992 World Cup-winning team.
The appointment follows a meticulous selection process with high-quality applicants worldwide, with Walters standing out due to his extensive experience and commitment to the role.
Walters expressed his enthusiasm, stating: “St.Helens are one of the most iconic and successful brands in rugby league. I am honoured to be given the opportunity by the Chairman, Eamonn McManus, and the St.Helens Board to lead a club with so much history."
He added, “For me, the foundation of success is creating the right environment where the players and staff enjoy coming to training and working hard for each other, as well as the Saints sponsors, fans and the wider community.”
Chairman Eamonn McManus emphasised Walters’ motivation and career sacrifices made to take up the role, reflecting St.Helens' ambition and commitment: “Kevin’s vast experience at both club and representative levels is self-evident."
Until Walters officially starts, Eamon O’Carroll will continue as the interim Head Coach.
The club also thanked the ARL Commission for their assistance in facilitating Walters' move to St. Helens.
